What Is Brand Visibility in AI Search?

How often AI engines mention your brand, whether what they say is accurate, and how you compare to the competitors named alongside you.

Check your brand

Brand visibility in AI search, defined

Brand visibility in AI search is how often, how accurately, and how favourably AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude describe your brand when someone asks a question in your category. It combines four things: whether you are mentioned, whether the claims made about you are true, the sentiment of the framing, and your share of voice against the competitors named in the same answer.

Brand visibility vs. AI visibility

The two are measured from the same data and are often used interchangeably, but they answer different questions.

AI visibility

Asks how much — presence and position across engines, tracked as metrics over time. The question an SEO or growth team is trying to move.

Brand visibility

Asks what is being said — accuracy, sentiment, and narrative. The question a brand, comms, or PR team is accountable for.

What AI brand monitoring should tell you

Four questions, in order. Each one only matters if the one before it is answered.

Are we mentioned at all?
The share of category prompts where an AI engine names you. If you are absent here, nothing else on this page matters yet — you are not in the consideration set.
Is what it says about us true?
Engines state pricing, features, and policies as fact. When those claims are stale or invented, every buyer who asks gets the wrong answer, and you never see the conversation.
How do we come across?
The framing around your name — confident, hedged, or negative. A high mention rate with poor sentiment is a reputation problem wearing the costume of a win.
Who gets recommended instead?
Share of voice against the competitors named in the same answers. This is the number that tells you whether you are gaining or losing ground in your category.

Where AI gets brands wrong

Unlike a search result, a generated answer states things as fact and shows no source. Buyers act on it without ever visiting your site, so the error is invisible to you unless you go looking for it.

Pricing that changed last quarter

Engines keep quoting the old number long after you changed it, because the page they learned it from is still cached or still live.

Features you shipped — or retired

New capabilities go unmentioned for months. Deprecated ones get recommended to buyers who then ask your sales team for something that no longer exists.

Policies you never had

Refund windows, SLAs, and trial terms get confidently invented from adjacent sources or competitor pages.

How to monitor and correct it

You cannot edit an AI engine's answer directly. What you can do is find the source it is reading and fix that.

  1. 1

    Find the checkable claims

Separate opinion from fact. "Popular with agencies" is not verifiable; "costs $99/month" is, and that is what gets checked.

  2. 2

Check them against your ground truth

Every factual claim is compared to your own verified content, not to a guess about what is correct.

  3. 3

Trace each wrong answer to its source

A wrong answer comes from somewhere — one of your own pages, a competitor, or a third-party site. The source is the thing you can actually act on.

  4. 4

    Track whether it improves

Re-sample on a schedule. Generative answers are non-deterministic, so a single re-check proves nothing; a trend does.
